Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

July 26, 2016

July 26th marks the anniversary of the day that the Americans with Disabilities act of 1990 was signed into law. The ADA was signed into law by president George H. Bush. Many people with disabilities in the US think of the ADA as the law that granted them their independence, and we here at UCP think it’s important to remember the ADA, because for many years people with disabilities lived in an America without it.

March Is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March 1 - March 31

In 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March “Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.” The deinstitutionalization movement of the seventies and early eighties had laid the foundation for significant social change, and the presidential proclamation called upon Americans to provide the “encouragement and opportunities” necessary for people with developmental disabilities to reach their potential.
